TIP TOPIC #1 - ART BUYERS LIST
Deluxe and Standard editions of PhotoJobsDatabase software have 1,000 art buyer contacts included. And you can add more with our supplemental lists or add/import up to 9,000 of your own. The contacts in Photo Jobs Database give you the capability to target market at a fraction of the cost of list services.
What is an art buyer?
The term “art buyer” in its broadest sense is any person who has the authority to buy your photography or illustration. This may include Creative Directors, Art Directors, Photo Editors, and Photo Producers. Within ad agencies, Art Buyer (sometimes Art Producer) is an actual title of the person in the art buying department responsible for finding the right photographer or illustrator for the job, negotiating fees and expenses, overseeing photo shoots, and handling estimates and other paperwork.
Who are agency Art Buyers?
Art Buyers in ad agencies usually have some background in photography, either through education or actual work experience – though not always. Sometimes they arrive at the job from experience as a producer or studio manager.
Do agency Art Buyers have any say in the decision of who gets hired?
Yes and no. Since agency Art Buyers are on the front line, they often make the initial decision on whose portfolio gets reviewed and whose doesn’t. At times, agency Art Directors may request to see a certain photographer’s work for a specific job. Many times, it is strictly up to the Art Buyer to find appropriate photographers for the job based on the specifications that have given to him/her by the Art Director.
How do I find out the names of art buyers?
Our Deluxe and Standard editions of PhotoJobsDatabase have 1,000 art buyer contacts already entered. These contacts include Art Buyers at ad agencies, retailers/catalogs, and other companies; Art Directors at ad agencies, magazines, entertainment companies, retailers/catalogs, and other corporations; and Photo Editors at magazines. We also have additional Supplemental Lists available. There are several other resources that offer mailing lists, which can be imported into PhotoJobsDatabase software so all your personal and professional contacts are in one place. See our Standard Edition product page for more information.
How do I know which agency Art Buyers will want to see my work?
There is no way to know for certain if an Art Buyer will want to see your work – but you won’t know unless you try. That said, you should begin by narrowing your focus to only those people who will be most apt to hire you for a project. For example, if you only shoot cars you do not want to waste your energy (and theirs) targeting an agency that doesn’t have car clients. On the other hand, if your photography is broader in scope, you may have to think “out of the box” about the various types of buyers your photography might appeal to. PhotoJobs Database includes hundreds of classification combinations and advanced search capabilites that allow you to find specific targets. See our Case Studies for information on how PJD can also be used to expand your market.
